THE WOMEN OF RIZAL

Segunda Katigbak

In his earlier years, Rizal admired a girl from his hometown, namely Segunda. And though she was set to be married to someone else, Segunda made Rizal’s heart flutter like any first love would.

Leonor Valenzuela

Rizal then met Leonor, a tall, pretty girl from Pagsanjan, Laguna. He would send her letters written in invisible ink, decipherable only by the warmth of a lamp or candle. It is said that before he left for Spain, he visited Leonor to say goodbye.

Leonor Rivera

Leonor was Rizal’s sweetheart for 11 years, playing a very positive role on his life during his travels. And though he sent Leonor numerous letters, her mother hid them all, making her think that he had forgotten about her completely. She later married an Englishman.

Consuelo Ortiga

Though Rizal probably had feelings for Consuelo, he had backed out of the relationship before it became serious as he had wanted to remain loyal to Leonor

O-Sei San

During his short stay in Japan, Rizal had become acquainted to Seiko, the daughter of a samurai who had taught him to read and write in Nihongo, and taught him the Japanese style of painting. If Rizal was not on a patriotic mission and had decided to settle down with Seiko after falling in love with her, his life would have prospered in Japan.

 Gertrude Beckette

In his travel to London, he had lodged in the house of the Beckett family, where he met Gertrude, who instantly fell in love with him. But before their relationship became serious, he had left for Paris, leaving behind a carving of the Beckett sisters as a remembrance of their brief, albeit joyous, times together.

 Nelly Boustead

After 11 years of correspondence and courtship, Rizal lost Leonor, and had began entertaining the idea of courting other ladies. He had met Nellie when he visited their residence as a guest, having a shared interest in fencing. And though over time they had fallen in love with each other, Rizal refused to convert to Protestantism and Nellie’s mother did not want to have a son-in-law that did not have a paying clientele. They had parted as good friends before Rizal left France to move to Belgium.

 Suzanne Jacoby

Rizal had lived in the boarding house of the Jacoby sisters in Brussels, Belgium. Though they had already fallen for each other, Rizal wanted to finish his patriotic mission and left for Madrid.

 Josephine Bracken

Perhaps the most famous and most controversial of Rizal’s lovers, he had met Josephine during his exile in Dapitan. In his final days, he had asked for her hand in marriage, and spent their days as man and wife before his execution in December 30, 1896
